GOODYEAR, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- A suspect was shot by Goodyear police after they say he tried to break into a woman's apartment, ran from officers and pulled out a gun early Thursday morning.

It all started just after midnight when officers responded to a call for 'suspicious activity' where a man was trying to get into a woman's apartment at a complex near I-10 and Dyart Road, according to Lisa Berry with Goodyear police.

Berry said when police tried to talk to the man, he shoved one of the officers and ran away. Police then chased him and he pulled out a gun, Berry said. The officer felt threatened by this and shot the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Malaki Cox.

Cox was taken to a hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive. Berry said no officers were injured. Police believe this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community because the suspect and the victim had a prior relationship.
